Suggested time

A very early start, or overnight

West of Kinshasa, in Kongo Central province, the Inkisi River drops about 65 metres over a broad rock ledge in a roar of brown water and mist. Zongo Falls is one of the most spectacular sights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it is close enough to the capital to be done in a day. It is a long day, and the road is part of the experience, but the reward is a waterfall you can hear before you see.

This guide covers what Zongo Falls is, what you will see around it, the smaller falls downstream where you can swim, where to eat and sleep, and what to arrange before you leave Kinshasa.

What Zongo Falls is

A big river, a hard drop and a lot of spray.

Zongo Falls (in French, Chutes de Zongo) is a waterfall on the Inkisi River, a tributary of the Congo. Most sources give its height as about 65 metres, and the water spreads across a wide, stepped ledge before dropping into a gorge. The spray is so thick it makes its own rain around the falls, so expect to get soaked at the viewpoints and to see rainbows when the sun is out.

The falls sit beside a hydroelectric installation, and a lodge on the riverbank gives day visitors somewhere to eat and rest. Further downstream the Inkisi runs on towards the Congo River, and tour operators run short excursions to the smaller Sunguza falls and to the point where the two rivers meet.

The falls and the river

Power from above, rapids below.

The main falls are the headline, but the river is worth as much of your time as the drop itself.

The main drop

Water pours over a broad ledge in several steps and roars into the gorge. Keep well back from wet rock.

Mist and rainbows

The spray rises into a permanent cloud. In sunshine it often catches a rainbow, so bring something to protect your camera.

Things to do

Look, listen, walk, eat.

  1. Stand in front of the falls

Walk to the viewpoints over the main drop. The sound alone is worth the journey. Wear shoes with grip, because rock near the spray is slick.

  2. Swim at the Sunguza falls

Roughly 10 km downstream, about a 20-minute drive or hike beyond the main falls, smaller cascades drop onto flat rocks. You can lie under the water for a natural massage, and unlike the main falls it is reported to be safe to swim. Ask at the lodge about a guide.

  3. See where the rivers meet

Operators also run visits to the beach where the Inkisi joins the Congo River. Ask whether it fits your day.

  4. Have lunch by the river

Seli Safari Resort has a restaurant beside the falls and is the usual lunch stop for day visitors.

  5. Stop at Kisantu on the way back

The Kisantu Botanical Garden, founded in 1900 and one of central Africa's oldest, is a pleasant detour if you are staying overnight and have a relaxed return.

TransportNo public transport. Hire a 4x4 with a driver for the day, or book a tour. The first half of the road is fairly smooth and the second half is rough.

Details are drawn from published sources, checked on 6 November 2026. Access, fees and opening hours change, so confirm before you travel.

Before you go. Bring plenty of drinking water, sun protection, shoes with grip, swimwear for the Sunguza falls, a full change of clothes (the spray soaks you at the viewpoints) and waterproof bags for phones and cameras. Carry cash in both Congolese francs and US dollars, and fill the tank before leaving the city. Stay well back from wet rock and from the edge, as the spray makes it slippery. Tell someone your plan, and check your government's current travel advice for DR Congo. If you have an extra day, Bombo-Lumene and Lola ya Bonobo make good separate outings.
